Choosing the Right Material for a Bespoke Chess Set

Material plays a major role in how a bespoke chess set looks, feels and ultimately functions.

At Skyline Chess, we work across 4 materials: bronze, stainless steel, composite resin and acrylic, selecting the production method around the requirements of each project.

Here are four examples of how different materials have been used to bring very different bespoke concepts to life.

Bronze: NBA Family Commission

This bespoke bronze chess set was created as a one-of-one family commission, with each piece designed to represent a different member of the family.

The hand-cast bronze pieces were paired with a bold, colourful storytelling board, transforming the finished commission into both a functional chess set and a sculptural family portrait.

Bronze was particularly suited to the project because of its weight, permanence and highly collectible character. It allowed the finished set to feel more like an heirloom object than a conventional game.

Best for: one-off commissions, VIP gifting, commemorative pieces and highly personal projects.
Available from: 1 set. Typical production: approximately 6–8 weeks from final design approval

Stainless Steel: Abstract Chess Set

The pieces were produced in stainless steel, giving the set a precise, contemporary and highly engineered character.

Rather than functioning simply as branded merchandise, the finished set became a design-led expression of the F1 team's identity. Stainless steel is particularly effective where clean geometry, weight and precision are central to the concept.

Best for: premium corporate gifting, automotive and technology brands, executive gifts and limited editions.
MOQ: 100 sets. Typical production: approximately 3–4 months from final design approval

Composite Resin: Cryptocurrency Edition

The pieces were designed around 13 different cryptocurrencies, transforming recognisable digital assets and symbols into sculptural chess forms while maintaining a coherent visual language across the complete set.

Composite resin gave us the flexibility to create multiple highly customised designs while retaining fine detail and a premium finish. The result was a contemporary chess set that transformed a digital subject into something tangible, designed to be displayed, collected and played.

Composite resin can be particularly useful for projects where intricate forms are required, or where colour and finishing flexibility are important.

Best for: technology and crypto brands, product launches, brand collaborations, community gifting and limited editions.
MOQ: 50 sets. Typical production: approximately 6–8 weeks from final design approval

Acrylic: Hong Kong Developer Edition

For a major Hong Kong property developer, the requirement was very different: create a distinctive bespoke gift that could be produced at scale while remaining closely connected to the company's architectural identity. Skyline Chess produced 1,500 acrylic chess sets, paired with branded wooden playing boards.

The same design concept was then extended into an exclusive bronze edition with bespoke marble boards for a smaller group of VIP recipients.

This allowed a single creative direction to work across two very different gifting tiers: acrylic for the wider programme and bronze for the most important recipients. Acrylic is particularly effective when volume, consistency and strong visual impact are key considerations.

Best for: large-scale gifting programmes, launches, events, promotional editions and brand collaborations.
MOQ: 500 sets. Typical production: approximately 6–7 months from final design approval
