A Bespoke Chess Set for the Antetokounmpo Family
Skyline Chess created a one-of-a-kind bespoke bronze chess set for the Antetokounmpo family, featuring individually sculpted family members, basketball-inspired pieces and a custom marble chessboard.
The set was delivered personally in Athens and conceived as both a functional chess set and a sculptural family portrait.
A family represented through chess
Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo sit at the heart of the set as King and Queen.
Thanasis, Giannis, Kostas and Alex are each represented through individually sculpted basketball poses, while custom basketball pawns complete the composition.
Rather than adapting traditional chess forms, every piece was designed specifically around the family and their connection to basketball.
Cast in solid bronze
Each figure was cast in solid bronze, giving the pieces a substantial weight and a strong sculptural presence.
The figures were mounted on Greek-inspired architectural plinths, creating a consistent visual language across the set while also referencing the family’s connection to Greece.
Bronze was particularly suited to this private commission because of its detail, permanence and collectible quality.
A bespoke marble chessboard
The pieces were paired with a custom marble chessboard featuring original artwork by Giorgos Hadjigeorgiou.
The vivid, Pop Art-inspired composition brings together places, achievements and personal details from the Antetokounmpo family’s story.
The contrast between the traditional bronze pieces and the expressive board gives the set its distinctive identity.
From concept to finished commission
Every element was developed specifically for the family, from the initial concept and sculpture development through to casting, finishing and the final board design.
The aim was not simply to create a personalised chess set, but a meaningful object that could capture the family’s story through sculpture, sport and craftsmanship.
