Introducing the Sara Rayo 'Chaturanga Square' Chess Set

NeoChess is pleased to introduce the 'Chaturanga Square' Sara Rayo Chess Set, a limited-edition collaboration between NeoChess and Colombian artist Sara Rayo, developed in partnership with 4Art Partners.

The project brings together chess, contemporary art and sculptural design, exploring ideas of geometry, depth and spatial perception through a new interpretation of the playing board.

At the centre of the edition is a 3D chess board, constructed as a 30mm deep form beneath glass. Rather than applying artwork directly onto the surface, the design places folded compositions from Sara Rayo’s work within the structure of the board itself. Alternating solid black squares and open voids create a layered visual effect, giving the piece a sense of movement and architectural depth.

As the board catches the light, the composition shifts. What first appears minimal gradually reveals interruptions, shadows and structures beneath the playing surface. The result is a chess board that changes depending on where it is viewed from, inviting closer attention over time.

The name Chaturanga references one of the earliest known predecessors of chess, connecting the project to the historical origins of the game. Through Sara Rayo’s contemporary artistic language, this ancient reference is reimagined as a sculptural object for today.

The edition is paired with NeoChess heavyweight wooden pieces and presented in a luxury format. Limited to just 20 sets, each edition is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity from Sara Rayo.

More than a chess set, this edition sits between playing board, sculpture and architectural object, a collectible piece designed for those who see chess not only as a game, but as a space for art, structure and strategy.
