Vatican Chess Set – A Tribute to Art and Craftsmanship
In 2018, we had the extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with the Vatican Museums on a project that merges design, history, and cultural legacy: a chess set that pays tribute to centuries of art, culture, and craftsmanship.
A Chess Set Inspired by the Vatican’s Artistic Legacy
Crafted with care and reverence, the wooden board design draws inspiration from the intricate ceiling of the Scala Simonetti, one of the Vatican’s architectural treasures. Each sculpted metal chess piece is a reinterpretation of a renowned artwork from the Vatican’s vast and historic collection:
-
King: Augustus of Prima Porta – Braccio Nuovo
-
Queen: Hera Barberini – Round Hall, Pio-Clementino Museum
-
Bishop: Bronze Hercules – Round Hall, Pio-Clementino Museum
-
Knight: Ancient horse head – Hall of Animals, Pio-Clementino Museum
-
Rook: Bramante Staircase
-
Pawn: Bronze Pigna (Pinecone) – Courtyard of the Pinecone
Every detail reflects a deep respect for the Vatican’s legacy, with each piece cast to last a lifetime.
A Testament to Craftsmanship and Bespoke Design
This collaboration is more than a collector’s item — it’s a statement piece. From the carved wood to the precisely cast metal figures, the set is designed to celebrate the intersection of timeless design and heritage.
